Sabah's Upko demands action over Facebook page insulting East Malaysians, Christians

KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah Barisan Nasional component party wants stern action against those responsible for creating a Facebook page that allegedly allowed people to insult Sabahans and Sarawakians.

Ranau division Upko deputy chief Datuk Siringan Gubat made the call following a police report lodged against those who created the "Semenanjung Malaysia Anti Sabah and Sarawak" Facebook page on Aug 7.

The Facebook page allegedly contained comments from people insulting Sabahans and Sarawakians, and also Christians in the country.

The police report was lodged by Tuaran Upko Youth members urging actions against administrators of the social webpage.

Siringan, who is also state Information, Technology and Resource Development Minister, said the page insulted the people in East Malaysia as well as hurt the feelings of Christians in the country.

"We cannot just sit down and keep quiet when someone does something as serious as this," he said, adding such acts would jeopardise existing unity and relations among people of different religions, and between East and West Malaysia.

"We also do not want to see any differences or bias in treatment or action against anyone who insults other religions, no matter who he or she is and from what religious background that person is from," Siringan stressed.

He said it would not be good for the image of the Government, which is aggressively promoting the 1Malaysia spirit and national integration between West and East Malaysia, if it took such matters lightly.
